Samra (Iara
Kendrick) a native of Brazil, began studying
belly dance with Gypsy in 1992. Since
then she has traveled all across the US
and around the world, including Turkey and
Egypt to study with some of the great masters
of Oriental and Folkloric dances. Samra
started teaching belly dance classes in
Galax, Virginia in 1993 and continued to
offer her classes until her move from Fancy
Gap to Winston-Salem in May of 2010. During
the last seven years she has traveled around
the world teaching workshops and performing
various styles of Middle Eastern dances,
fusion and fire dancing. She also
teaches workshops and private lessons locally
and beyond.
Since moving to Winston
Salem, Samra and several other local artists
have established the World Artists Mosaic,
a collaborative of performing artists dedicated
to cultural diversity of which she is president.
Samra’s approach to dancing is that everyone
can dance regardless of age, body type,
physical limitations, or previous experience.
Dancing and performing are often interrelated,
but Samra feels that each individual should
be allowed to decide at which level they
desire to take the art of dance whether
it is to the stage or purely for personal
enrichment or fitness.
For those students
desiring a daytime class opportunity, Samra
(Iara Kendrick) will be offering a six-week
session (Traditional Belly Dance Basics)
on Thursdays, from 11am - 12noon beginning
January 12. Cost is $50.00 for the
session or $10.00 per lesson… for more information:
